Sanctions and Export Control Updates
Updates on two stories we have been following:
Today's New York Times reports that OFAC's request for the Sheraton Maria Isabel Hotel in Mexico City to have 16 Cuban nationals check out of the hotel and leave the premises has "provoked a minor storm" in Mexico and Cuba.
Tomorrow's Yomiuri Shimbun contains an editorial entitled "cautionary tale for firms keen on China trade" that discusses the various implications of Yamaha Motor Co.'s export of remote-controlled crop-spraying helicopter to China. The editorial notes that "this incident stands as a warning for Japanese companies keen on doing business with China" and that they "should reexamine their inhouse export control systems to check whether their products could be converted for military use."
