Burma Import Sanctions Renewed

On July 8, 2004, President Bush signed into law H.J.Res. 97, a bill renewing the import restrictions imposed by the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003 (Public Law 108-61, 117 STAT. 864) for an additional one-year period.

The Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act prohibits all products produced in Burma (Myanmar) from being imported directly or indirectly into the U.S. until the President determines that the Burmese government has fulfilled a series of reforms described in the law.

The ban on imports from Burma can be extended to a maximum of three years and must be renewed annually. The one-year renewal of the import ban was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on June 14, 2004 by a vote of 372-2 and by the Senate on June 24, 2004 by a vote of 96-1.
